HireSmart Grant Funds Formal Luncheon at High School ‘Adulting Day’

From changing tires to proper table etiquette, Commerce High School seniors gained valuable life skills during the school’s fourth annual “Adulting Day.”
The April 17 event, supported by a $1,800 grant from HireSmart Cares, offered students hands-on experience with essential tasks they’ll face after graduation.
“In the morning, they have rotations where they go around and learn about laundry care, auto maintenance, CPR, first aid, and budgeting,” said Cameron Shirley, Commerce High School’s CTAE Director. “They learn about professionalism and proper dress.”
Students participated in practical sessions throughout the morning, getting their hands dirty changing tires, practicing CPR techniques, and learning fundamental budgeting principles. Safety education was also emphasized, teaching students how to navigate unfamiliar situations after high school.
“They love the stations in the morning. We try to make it as hands-on as possible,” Shirley explained. “They’re actually practicing changing the tire, they are actually cooking an entire meal, and they’re actually doing CPR and first aid.”
The afternoon included a formal etiquette luncheon where students experienced a business-style dining environment. Underclassmen from the school’s food nutrition program served a catered meal set with formal four-piece place settings on black tablecloths.
“At lunchtime, we switch and move into an etiquette luncheon,” said Shirley. “They have a four-piece place setting at the table. Someone walks them through proper table manners and etiquette when you’re in a business setting because most of them have never experienced that.”
Students learned practical dining skills including which utensils to use, how to pass bread baskets and condiments, and the importance of putting away cell phones during formal meals.
The $1,800 grant from HireSmart Cares covered the luncheon costs. HireSmart Cares is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping the next generation succeed through workforce development initiatives, particularly in agriculture and trades careers.
Founded by Mark and Anne Lackey, HireSmart Cares invests in youth through scholarships, grants, funding for job skills programs, and educational opportunities. The organization focuses on giving students tools to succeed in careers without necessarily taking on college debt.
For Commerce High School students, the Adulting Day experience provided practical skills that formal education sometimes overlooks.
While seniors enjoyed the hands-on activities and sometimes laughed at their etiquette mistakes, they also displayed those “little light bulb” moments that educators treasure.
As these seniors prepare to enter adulthood, Commerce High School’s innovative program ensures they’ll face life’s practical challenges — from flat tires to formal dinners — with confidence and competence.
